Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union Paul Ziemiak stated that the Union has “submitted an offer” to enter into negotiations with both the FDP and Green parties, while speaking to the press in Berlin on Thursday.

Following Sunday’s federal election the conservative Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) won 196 out of 735 seats in the Budestag (German Parliament) and a 24.1 percent vote share, losing out to the centre-left Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) who won the most seats (206) and 25.7 percent of the vote share.

The CDU intend to enter discussions with the FDP and The Greens with a negotiating team of ten. The team includes Paul Ziemiak, the party leader and Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet and other senior party officials.

The CDU are not the only party intending to explore possibilities with FDP and The Greens as Olaf Scholz expressed desire to form a coalition with the two parties on Monday.

Potential governing coalitions include the ‘Jamaica’ and the ‘traffic light’ coalitions. A ‘Jamaica’ coalition would be comprised of a Green Party, CDU/CSU and FDP governing majority, whereas the ‘traffic light’ coalition would be a Green Party, SPD and FDP majority.

SOT, Paul Ziemiak, CDU General Secretary (German): “During these times, the party chairmen of the CDU and CSU Armin Laschet and Markus Soder have submitted an offer to talk to both the FDP as well as the the Greens. This offer has been accepted and we believe that it makes sense to talk about whether there is a possibility to forge a future alliance.”

SOT, Paul Ziemiak, CDU General Secretary (German): “This could be a coalition for sustainability in every dimension. On the question of climate protection and also the question of sustainability pertaining to the financing of the state, on the question of a modern state, but also the question of the digitalisation of our country.”

SOT, Paul Ziemiak, CDU General Secretary (German): “This offer is based on our content orientation, which we laid down in the resolutions we recently made, in particular on the basis of the election program of the CDU and CSU. We have just discussed it in the Presidium and there is a large majority in favour of these discussions. We also have our delegation put together and will meet with the Free Democrats (FDP) on Sunday evening at 6.30pm and on Tuesday morning with the Greens. We are serious about these talks and of course we are going into these talks with an openness regarding the others’ positions because we want to build bridges.”

SOT, Paul Ziemiak, CDU General Secretary (German): “We are convinced that we have a good offer and we have to talk about this offer. We have no entitlement, no legal entitlement, but we have an offer and the others also have an offer and they achieved a good result in these elections, the FDP and Greens, and we congratulated all the parties which grew with these elections, but not it’s about seeing which coalition is possible. We agree that we should go into these discussions, that was the large majority in the presidium, as I said.”

SOT, Paul Ziemiak, CDU General Secretary (German): “So, in the negotiation team are party chairman and Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet, myself as the Secretary General, the parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus, the Prime Ministers [Volker] Bouffier, [Daniel] Gunther and [Reiner] Haseloff, as well as Thomas Strobl, Julia Klockner, Silvia Breher, and Jens Spahn.”

SOT, Paul Ziemiak, CDU General Secretary (German): “So we are in agreement and we have seen that truth that we have with this result that we received, one must say that this hasn’t left us indifferent, and that means that regardless of the question of whether we govern or not, governing is not an end itself but rather about the shaping of the country, one can do something good. With a common spirit and narrative, or course, the party has to renew and modernise itself, and as said, independent of the question of governing or not, we are working on that at the same time, I was already involved different internal decisions. Now today with the young ones of our party and tomorrow with our local politicians where this question is at hand. The election result should not just be analysed, but conclusions must be drawn from it, and that’s what we are doing now at the same time.”
