Germany: Laschet and Merkel motorcade arrives at CDU HQ in Berlin as coalition talks start

Christian Democratic Union (CDU)’s Armin Laschet and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were seen arriving at the party’s headquarters in Berlin, Monday.

Laschet is scheduled to deliver a statement following the announcement of the federal election’s official results and as coalition talks start to form a new government.

On Sunday, tens of millions of Germans cast their ballots to determine the country’s next government, which will eventually decide who will succeed Angela Merkel as she steps down after 16 years as German chancellor.

According to preliminary results, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) garnered 25,7 percent of the votes, winning the most seats in the Bundestag, with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) following with 24,1 percent, Alliance 90/The Greens 14,8 percent and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) 11,5 percent of the votes.
