Germany: Commuters cross German-Austria border ahead of new COVID-19 restrictions

Commuters crossed the border between Germany and Austria, near Innsbruck, on Saturday without additional restrictions, before Austria is set to be categorised a high-risk area by Germany.

Starting on Sunday, commuters, who are not vaccinated against or recovered from COVID-19, will have to quarantine upon their return to Germany, the country’s Health Ministry confirmed on Friday.

The move comes as Austria has seen a spike in infections in the recent weeks with more than 9,900 daily infections amid a vaccination rate of around 65 percent.
