Germany: Demonstrators rally in Berlin in solidarity with Kazakh protest wave

Dozens gathered in front of Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on Saturday to show solidarity with anti-government protesters in Kazakhstan amid a week of unrest in the country.

Demonstrators could be seen holding Kazakh flags and banners and chanting ‘Go Kazakhstan.’
One of the demonstrators expressed her concern about her family living in the country’s biggest city Almaty as she is not able to reach them for days. “Give us the chance to contact our parents and relatives, and let not the people suffer, because we know for sure that Kazakh people are not terrorists and not bandits,” protester Gulzhan said.

Earlier on Saturday, Kazakhstan’s National Security Committee said its former chief Karim Masimov was arrested on suspicion of high treason connected to the unrest as relative calm returned to the country after days of violent clashes between protesters and security forces.

Unrest has gripped the central Asian republic after unauthorised rallies began in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan on Sunday, as prices of LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) rose from 60 to 120 tenge (€0.12 to €0.24; $0.14 to $0.28) per litre since January 1. The price hike came after the government lifted price controls on LPG, citing a need to liberalise the market.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev accepted the cabinet’s official resignation on Wednesday, however, the government will continue in its function until a new cabinet of ministers is formed.
Authorities have also announced several restored price caps on LPG, commonly used in cars, in response to the unrest.

According to the republic’s Ministry of Health, more than 1,000 people have been injured during the ongoing protests and almost 400 were hospitalised. Over 4,000 people were detained and dozens killed since the protests started.

There are so many provocative videos and picture on the internet, we don’t know what to believe. All that we we want to say now and what we want to translate, is: give us the chance to contact our parents and relatives, and let not the people suffer, because we know for sure that Kazakh people are not terrorists and not bandits.”

SOT, Demonstrator (Russian): “For thirty years we suffered under Nazarbayev’s regime, who was robbing our country. He made hundreds of billions dollars as well as his circle, while simple Kazakhs get paid as in Africa.”

SOT, Demonstrator (Russian): “Kazakhs will stand until the end, we will fight for our sacred homeland that we got from our ancestors, we will fight for our homeland until the last drop of blood. If Putin and Lukashenko want problems, they will get them. Go Kazakhstan.”
