Germany: FDP's Lindner says country is "left-wing enough" at final campaign rally in Dusseldorf

Free Democratic Party (FDP) chancellor candidate Christian Lindner stated that in his view Germany doesn’t need more left-wing politics, speaking at his final election campaign rally in Dusseldorf on Saturday.

“In 2021, we are not ready to send our country on a leftwards drift. We don’t need more leftist politics. Germany is left-wing enough,” he stated.

“There is only only guarantor of the centre, and that is the Free Democrats,” he added.

The German federal elections take place this Sunday. The SPD’s Olaf Scholz, the CDU’s Armin Laschet and the Greens’ Annalena Baerbock are the three candidates most likely to become chancellor according to the latest polls, with Scholz marginally in the lead. The pro-business FDP may have a role to play in the formation of the ruling coalition depending on the final election tallies.
