FDP party leader Christian Lindner emphasised the importance of tackling environmental questions during a campaign event held in Chemnitz on Friday.
“Did you know the first minister in Germany to address environmental questions was Hans-Dietrich Genscher from the FDP? The first environmental program from a German government was enacted in 1971 by Hans-Dietrich Genscher,” Lindner highlighted the FDP’s credentials of environmental protection in government.
Lindner also took a jab at the Greens saying, “Hans-Dietrich Genscher was already busy with environmental policies while Joschka Fischer was throwing rocks at the police.”
FDP is likely to be a key party this federal election, with the possibility of a traffic light coalition alongside the SPD and Greens that could force the CDU out of government for the first time in nearly two decades.
Germany’s federal election is September 26.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Christian Lindner, Leader of FDP (German): “A great sign and it sends a message that there are so many of you here at this event. The message is to one again count on Sachsen to be with the FDP on September 26 for the federal elections. Thank you so much for this motivation.”
SOT, Christian Lindner, Leader of FDP (German): “Did you know the first minister in Germany to address environmental questions was Hans-Dietrich Genscher from the FDP? The first environmental program from a German government was enacted in 1971 by Hans-Dietrich Genscher. The German Environmental Agency was founded by Hans-Dietrich Genscher. To say it another way, Hans-Dietrich Genscher was already busy with environmental policies while Joschka Fischer was throwing rocks at the police.”
SOT, Christian Lindner, Leader of FDP (German): “China, the US are growing 7-8 percent out of the pandemic. Italy, 4 percent economic growth, Germany 2 some are saying. For many reasons but also because we are not competitive anymore. 2 percent can be translated into less investment, fewer new jobs, can be translated as less public revenue to close the deficit.”
SOT, Christian Lindner, Leader of FDP (German): “For climate protection you need to invest. We know that for social programs you need an economy that stabilises the middle. It is the mid-sized businesses, it is the economy that hammer down the pegs of which the social net can be hung over. That means all social and ecological policies has preconditions, namely a strong economic foundation. If you want to have social and ecological policies you must first take care of having a strong economy that provides for the middle and a strong economy, that is something we understand.”
