Part of the Berlin Wall, also known as the East Side Gallery, was graffiti sprayed by football fans of the visiting Dutch team ‘Feyenoord Rotterdam’ in the early hours of Wednesday, ahead of a match against the local FC Union football team.
According to local media, shortly after the initial act of vandalism, two men were arrested in the vicinity with paint on their hands.
Later in the day, the approximately 18 metre (59 foot) long ‘Feyenoord’ graffiti was sprayed over in silver by FC Union Berlin fans in an act of rivalry, with ‘Ultras Union’ being written over the silver paint in black.
The incident took place on a matchday between FC Union Berlin and Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Conference League group stage on Thursday evening.
Tensions are high following violent confrontations during the first match two weeks ago in the Netherlands, with the Dutch team winning the game 3-1.
The East Side Gallery memorial is a permanent open-air gallery in the district of Berlin-Friedrichshain, along the river Spree. It is the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall.
