First deputy government spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann stated that talks would be held regarding “European security architecture” and “Russian interests” as part of the Weimar Triangle Meeting during a press conference on Monday in Berlin.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin with Presidents of France Emmanuel Macron, Poland Andrzej Duda and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“It is well known that Russia’s proposals for a European security architecture and Russian security interests are also being discussed at several levels. This is happening between Russia and the United States. It is also happening in the OSCE and, of course, in bilateral talks,” stated Hoffmann.

The German government particularly welcomed the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron in deescalating the conflict in Ukraine.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Christiane Hoffmann, First deputy government spokesperson (German): “On February 8 at 7 pm a meeting will take place in the Federal Chancellery as part of the Weimar Triangle. The Federal Chancellor invited French President Macron and Polish President Duda to exchange views on the situation in and around Ukraine in particular.”

SOT, Christiane Hoffmann, First deputy government spokesperson (German): “This meeting of the Weimar Triangle is part of a whole series of diplomatic efforts. We have already talked about the French President’s trip to Moscow. The Federal Chancellor will have just returned from the USA at that moment. There will certainly also be an exchange about the talks.”

SOT, Christiane Hoffmann, First deputy government spokesperson (German): “It is well known that Russia’s proposals for a European security architecture and Russian security interests are also being discussed at several levels. This is happening between Russia and the United States. It is also happening in the OSCE and, of course, in bilateral talks. All of this serves to defuse the situation around Ukraine and bring about a lasting solution to the tensions.”

SOT, Christofer Burger, Foreign office spokesperson (German): “You know that the Foreign Minister is in Kiev today for talks and will also travel to the contact line tomorrow to get her own picture of the situation of the people on the spot, but especially with regard to the humanitarian situation of the people who work there who have been in an extremely difficult situation for years due to the conflict. We are working, among other things, with the efforts in the Normandy format, to which Hoffmann also just referred - to generate movement towards implementing the Minsk agreements again.”

SOT, Christiane Hoffmann, First deputy government spokesperson (German): “On the contrary, it is quite clear that sanctions will only be imposed in the event of Russian aggression. The Chancellor has repeatedly spoken about the fact that we are in consultation with our allies on these sanctions - in Europe and also on the other side of the Atlantic.”
