SOT, Christofer Burger, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (German): “In Kiev Foreign Minster Baerbock and German representatives of the OSCE Monitoring Mission SMM will meet with the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairmanship in Ukraine and Trilateral Contact Group Mikko Kinnunen.”
SOT, Christofer Burger, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (German): “Following this, Minister Baerbock continues to Moscow, where she will meet Foreign Minister Lavrov on Tuesday, January 18th.”
SOT, Christofer Burger, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (German): “Both in Kiev and in Moscow, as is customary during commencement visits, it will of course also be a matter of acknowledging the entire breadth of bilateral relations, which is particularly pronounced on a social level, but at the same time this trip will of course also take place with a certain political context that will include particularly urgent questions regarding the military situation near the Ukrainian border and, of course, the various discussion formats that have taken place with Russia over the past week.”
SOT, Christofer Burger, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (German): “Of course, in a broader sense, it will also be about the talks that were held last week, which are about the question of how security can be arranged in Europe so that states don’t threatened by each other, but I also want to say clearly that the the Foreign Minister’s talks are not simply the continuation of the talks in other formats that took place in the NATO-Russia Council or in the OSCE, certainly not the bilateral Russian-American talks.”
SOT, Christofer Burger, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (German): “Regarding the hacker attack I can tell you that the federal government condemns the severe hacker attack that has hit many central government bodies in Ukraine. As a close partner to Ukraine we are of course ready to support in this severe cyber crisis as we are currently intensively examining what such support can look like. There was also an exchange today on the sidelines of the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministerss and Foreign Ministers in Brest. High Representative Borrell already announced this morning that the EU would also offer help and we will be actively involved.”
SOT, Christiane Hoffmann, Government spokesperson (German): “So basically, in these talks about which Mr Burger spoke, it was welcomed at all levels, both with the USA within the framework of the OSCE in Brussels, with the NATO-Russia Council and also in the Normandy format, that the Russian side is ready for talks. And now there is hope and efforts being made that these talks will be consolidated and continued, and I want to emphasize once again, that the Chancellor expressed great concern about the situation on the Russian/Ukrainian border which he did again in the Bundestag, which makes it all the more important that these discussion formats are now made permanent.”
SOT, Christiane Hoffmann, Government spokesperson (German): “We have taken note of the discussions in the US Congress, such as this recent vote on a new sanctions law. We have communicated several times that Germany and the USA are very closely linked and are in a trusting exchange on many topics with the joint declaration. In the joint statement of July 21, the USA and Germany have stated their common goals and convictions on questions of support for Ukraine and European energy security, including of course with regard to Nord Stream 2. We continue to agree with the US administration on the implementation of the joint statement and are in constructive exchange at various levels.”
