Germany: Govt wants to avoid escalation in Russia situation any further

The German government is continuing to warn about “severe consequences” for Russia if the situation in Ukraine doesn’t de-escalate.

According to new government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit, the German government, led now by former Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is “trying to talk to all the relevant stakeholders through all channels.”

However, he said there have been “no advance services or offers that are made beyond that,” at a press conference in Berlin on Monday.

“It is a serious situation and in a serious situation it is wise to use the available formats in order not to escalate the situation any further,” Hebestreit added.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christofer Burger said that the new Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock reiterated that the government “very much support and would like to see a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council.”

“We have been offering this for a long time, and it would certainly be a suitable forum for reopening discussions, perhaps not specifically about the situation in Ukraine, but about the fundamental question of how security in Europe can be shaped cooperatively,” he said.

Regarding the Nordstead 2 project that is currently suspended, Hebestreit, said: “there is an examination pending according to European energy law criteria, and we have to wait for that.”

Particularly with regard to the health of Julian Assange, but in principle, as the government spokesperson has just said, the German government must respect the decisions of independent courts in a state governed by the rule of law - whether one personally considers them to be right or wrong in an individual case. The British legal system itself, as Mr Hebestreit also pointed out, also offers further possibilities for legal protection, up to and including the European Court of Human Rights, so in this respect I cannot comment further on the decisions. As I said, it is an issue that concerns us and which the foreign minister has also raised personally.”
