Green Party candidate for chancellor Annalena Baerbock held a campaign rally in Munich, on Thursday, where she discussed issues including climate change, the European Union, and Afghanistan ahead of the federal elections set to take place on September 26.
“We now need a comprehensive ban on deportation to Afghanistan. The people who are here, who live in tolerance, need to know that they can stay safely here in Germany,” she said.
Baerbock also called out the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) parties, the Greens’ two main competitors in the race for chancellor, for leading the country to a ‘dead end’ on climate change.
The Green party is currently third in the polls behind the SPD and Angela Merkel’s CDU, once an overwhelming favourite in the race.

M/S Moderator announcing Baerbock *UPSOUND* Moderator (German); “Dear party chairmen, dear Munich citizens, our candidate for chancellor, here she is, here is Annalena Baerbock.”

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Chancellor candidate of The Greens (German): “We as a country, we as a society, can make up our minds, let’s continue as before, wait, duck and, if in doubt, do nothing. Or do we dare a real departure, let’s finally get the best out of our country and that’s what we stand for, this is what I stand for. For the next federal government.”

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Chancellor candidate of The Greens (German): “Yes, that also sets us apart from other parties. The Union has decided we will talk about money after the election, you can choose that too, honest politics. And if we want to get children out of poverty, then in a situation where the richest in our country are getting richer and the poorest are getting poorer again and again, we have to ensure that the income tax rates for the richest are increased by 1 to 2 percent and we reintroduce wealth taxation.”

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Chancellor candidate of The Greens (German): “But what does not work is to say that we will instead abolish the Soli and thus have 10 billion euros less in the box, as is Mr Laschet’s proposal. Because by doing this, we don’t ensure better day-care centers and schools, nor do we have swimming pools or local public transport in rural areas, but we ensure that social divisions increase. Instead of decreasing. And this policy of the 90s, for which a man of the 90s should now also be responsible, I think we can really save ourselves in 2021.”

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Chancellor candidate of The Greens (German): “Wherever German politics has always meant saying about a young union, we stand up for our common Europe, in case of doubt also with the smaller countries. If I really couldn’t have dreamed that it is the German federal government that has slowed down everything that has started in Europe in recent years.

The car limits are only one thing, but what really holds Europe together is the values, human rights, our rule of law, that it was blocked by the Union and here in Bavaria of all places. Because they wanted to meet Viktor Orban and, in the end, align their refugee policy with Victor Orban. That is not only inappropriate for this country, it is a blockade for the European Union that we will have to lift after September 26th.”

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Chancellor candidate of The Greens (German): “Yes, we now need a comprehensive ban on deportation to Afghanistan. The people who are here, who live in tolerance, need to know that they can stay safely here in Germany.”

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Chancellor candidate of The Greens (German): “And especially with the greatest challenge of our time, the climate crisis, this government lead the SPD and CDU has led us to a dead end.”

SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Chancellor candidate of The Greens (German): “Let us have the courage to finally courageously tackle future issues. Renewing our country and not doing things half-way when it comes to climate protection. Yes, change requires courage. But the biggest risk we currently have is nothing more to do.”
