Germany: Baerbock slams govt for leaving Afghans "in the lurch"

Green party chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock slammed the government for leaving Afghans ‘in the lurch,’ after Germany’s efforts to airlift people out of the country concluded with thousands of local workers left behind.
“I don’t want this to happen again in this country, responsibility means also taking action in difficult moments and saving people that still can be saved,” said Baerbock, adding that deportations to Afghanistan should be halted.
While the German military flew out over 5,000 people during its airlift, only 138 workers local staff and 496 of their family members were among those evacuated according to the German Interior Ministry, out of over 40,000 eligible.
Baerbock’s Greens have fallen in the polls from record highs earlier in the year but still sit in third place with around 18 percent, ahead of the German federal elections set for Sunday, September 26.
