Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer stressed the importance of protecting rights of ‘local workers’ amid the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, Berlin, Thursday.
“By the way, they are not refugees or asylum seekers, but they are given permission by the German government to stay in Germany out of national political interests,” he stressed.
Seehofer stated that 4,800 local Afghans had already been brought to Germany since 2013 and that the Federal Government was undertaking efforts to evacuate more people.
“We have to say quite clearly that the UNHCR needs much more support from the international community in its beneficial work,” he added, stressing, “We want to help Afghanistan itself, which is why we very much appreciate the fact that the UNHCR is staying in Afghanistan.”
