Hundreds of people commemorated the murder victims of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) and rallied against Neo-Nazi violence and structural racism in Zwickau on Saturday.

As many as 600 demonstrators from the left spectrum started at the main station and marched through the city chanting slogans like ‘we are all antifascists’ and holding up banners reading ‘Commemorate the victims of right-wing terror’ and ‘Fight right-wing terror’.

Rallies were held at five intermediate stops where speakers reportedly talked about right-wing activities in Zwickau and condemned the German state for not fully solving and investigating the so-called NSU complex.

In the run-up to the protest, right-wing groups had called for counter-protests on the internet. However, a large contingent of police prevented people from the right-wing spectrum from getting through to the demonstration.

The reason for the commemoration march was the 10th anniversary of the uncovering of the Neo-Nazi terrorist group NSU. Between 2000 and 2007 the group committed a series of murders and bombings, with victims being migrants of Turkish, Greek and Kurdish descent. For several years the group used a safe house in Zwickau without being discovered.
