SOT, Karl Lauterbach, German Health Minister (German): “The goal is to stretch the inevitable, which is the increasing number of omicron cases, and reduce it in such a way that we get through this wave with as few casualties as possible. And from what we see so far, the measures that we have taken are also showing the roughly expected effect. Still, there’s no reason to sound the all-clear.”

SOT, Karl Lauterbach, German Health Minister (German): “We want to turn what would otherwise be a steep wall of infection numbers into a hill if possible, or if it can’t be avoided, a wall, a wall that is not so high. That’s the strategic goal of the German government.”

SOT, Karl Lauterbach, German Health Minister (German): “I think we’re entering some difficult waters now. We’re going to have to take care of a lot of people with infections. The hospitals are going to be at their breaking point, the labs are going to be at their breaking point.”

SOT, Karl Lauterbach, German Health Minister (German): “I am in favour of a vaccine mandate without any ifs or buts. I’m in favour of mandatory vaccination starting at 18. I think that otherwise we’ll be facing a situation again in the fall that we don’t want. I don’t think that variant will be the last variant. I think that’s almost impossible.”

SOT, Karl Lauterbach, German Health Minister (German): “When medical students advocate for people to get vaccinated, and so people who are at risk are protected from serious illness and death that way, this has my full approval.”

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach voiced his support for a vaccine mandate during a federal press conference in Berlin, on Friday.

The statement made by the health minister was one of his own personal opinion on the situation and not an official statement on behalf of the German government or German health ministry.
