Germany: Locals clean up, remove water from their homes as floods hit Saxony

Locals of various municipalities in the German state of Saxony were cleaning up and removing water from their homes, Sunday, after the area was hit by floods the night before.

Footage from Bad Schandau shows locals and the fire department as they attempt to clear away the mud and debris left by the floodwaters.

“We know how it goes and this time it was not so high like in 2010, and yeah, here everything is wet, water went in, everything is covered in mud here. The fire department is cleaning everything again,” said one local, Bernd.

Over 180 people died in the flooding in western Germany and Belgium, with more people still missing Sunday morning. At least 143 died in Germany, where the floods are the country’s worst natural disaster in over half a century.

SOT, Dagmar Hofer, local (German): “THW (Technische Hilfswerk) and the fire department were working through the night but this morning the streets are still blocked into the Saxon-Switzerland. One cannot go climbing in there or walking, through the weather everything is disturbed.”

SOT, Renata, local (German): “It was crazy, the entire day it was raining and raining, and it took everything away with it. Above and below the clinic everything was blocked, buses aren’t driving, nothing more, we can only just walk. And all around you can see there is just mud everywhere. A calamity.”
