Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany must engage with the Taliban in order to evacuate the Afghans who worked for its forces.
“They are the ones one needs to talk to now. We want to get people who have worked for German development aid organisations in particular, and who now feel at risk, out of the country,” said Merkel
She spoke at a news conference in Hagen after touring the areas of the state of North Rhein-Westphalia that suffered from the devastating floods in July.
Merkel threw her support behind her party’s leading candidate and the leader of the state Armin Laschet who is hoping to succeed her after this month’s election.
“Armin Laschet leads the largest state in Germany very successfully. We can look at the specific things the state government did, mainly simplifying planning and accelerating it, maybe the federal government could learn from it and whoever can lead a state like him can also lead Germany as chancellor,” said Merkel.

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “Armin Laschet leads the largest state in Germany very successfully. We can look at the specific things the state government did, mainly simplifying planning and accelerating it, maybe the federal government could learn from it and whoever can lead a state like him can also lead Germany as chancellor.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “The reconstruction will take a long time that becomes more clear day by day and that is why the talks today were so important, to meet with the volunteer firefighters who tragically lost two fellow firefighters from Altena and Werdohl but also impressive in how they can continue with their volunteer work with such dedication.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “We have the flood assistance, we have 30 billion by the end of next week it will be collected from the other states, but there will be much to pay attention to from the beginning and the people on the ground know how to deal with it much better, those responsible mayors and local representatives.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German):“As far as the Taliban are concerned, of course we have to talk to them, because they are the ones one needs to talk to now. We want to get people who have worked for German development aid organisations in particular, and who now feel at risk, out of the country. We also want the international aid organisations - and Germany supports these very much - to be able to improve the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. There is drought, there is hunger, and it was a good signal yesterday that Kabul airport is accessible again.”
