Scuffles erupted between police officers and Kurdish protesters marching at the ‘Lift the PKK Ban’ demanding the release of Kurdish leader and founder of the Kurdistan’s Workers Party (PKK) on Saturday in Berlin.
Protesters marched with signs bearing messages like ‘End the German-Turkish war partnership! Lift the PKK Ban’ while chanting ‘Long live Ocalan,’ and ‘Erdogan, terrorist,’ highlighting that the ban results from the cooperation with the Turkish state.
Several Kurdish, German, and migrant organisations established the ‘Lift the PKK Ban’ initiative, decrying the political and cultural consequences of the 28-year-long ban on the Kurdish community.
The PKK ban was introduced by the German government on November 26, 1993, and is classified as a terrorist organisation in the EU.
Ocalan is currently serving an aggravated life imprisonment sentence in Turkey. He has been held in isolation on the prison island of Imrali, receiving only a handful of visits since 2011.
