Police could be seen shoving and detaining anti-lockdown protesters in Berlin on Sunday, as people demonstrated near the city’s Victory Column despite a ban on several demonstrations.
Police officers could be seen chasing down protesters on bikes and arresting others, while a water cannon was on the scene but not put into use.
A Berlin court banned multiple protests planned for the weekend, with affected events including huge demos planned by the Querdenken movement, as well as others in support of Berlin’s club scene, citing concerns over the spread of the Delta variant.
Germany has eased most of the pandemic-related restrictions since the start of summer, but some are still in place - such as mandatory mask-wearing in the public transport and indoor spaces - as according to the Robert Koch Institute, the fourth wave of the pandemic has already begun in the country. A German government official warned in late July that the number of new cases could soar to 100,000 a day in about two months unless many more people get vaccinated, while those who decide not to may face restrictions. More than 91,000 people have died in Germany with COVID-19.
