Police advised residents not to go outside and closed nearby roads after an explosion at an industrial park in Leverkusen, on Tuesday.
“We were alerted at around half past nine by numerous so-called ‘bang witnesses’ that an explosion had occurred here, in the area of the waste incineration plant,” said Cologne police spokesperson Christoph Gilles.
Gilles said that police have cordoned off the surrounding streets and highways and called in trained specialists.
“We have appropriately qualified and trained forces to support our colleagues from the fire brigade,” he added.
According to the company that operates the plant, Currenta, on Tuesday afternoon, a missing employee was found dead after the severe explosion.
Currenta further announced that four employees were still missing after the accident at the site, in addition to 16 injured, four of whom were seriously hurt.
