German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel commemorated the historical November 9 in Berlin on Tuesday.

“And just as November 9 the casts long shadows, it too has a long history. We cannot understand November 9th in the 20th century without a deeper look back - a look at the roots of the freedom and democracy movement in the 19th century and at their opposing forces, at restoration, anti-liberalism and megalomania,” Steinmeier said in a speech.

November 9 is a day of historical significance for Germany, marking the anniversary of a number of crucial events in the country’s history. Among the most significant is ‘Kristallnacht,’ or the ‘Night of the Broken Glass,’ the day in 1938 when Nazi Germany began a pogrom against the Jewish population.

November 9, 1989 meanwhile is the date when the Berlin Wall was toppled, paving the way for the eventual reunion of Germany’s East and West.
