German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert said a report was expected from election officials on problems with ballot papers and long queues outside polling stations in Berlin during the vote over the weekend. Seibert was speaking at a news conference in the German capital on Wednesday.
The spokesperson also refused to confirm whether the outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated SPD candidate Olaf Scholz with the narrow victory in the poll.
“I can’t say now from confidential conversations the content of which I don’t know, the way I know the chancellor and her attitude to such democratic practices I suppose so, but I can’t say now….maybe I can message her,” said Seibert.
It comes as negotiations were underway to form a coalition government after the SPD narrowly beat Merkel’s CDU in Sunday’s vote.
