SOT, Steffen Hebestreit, German government spokesperson (German): “There are now the first cautious announcements that the concentration of troops there would be reduced, that would be a good signal, but we still lack clear evidence that would also confirm this announcement, so we encourage the Russian side to follow words with deeds.”

SOT, Steffen Hebestreit, German government spokesperson (German): “It is also clear that Russia and Belarus are still called upon to de-escalate; and the announcement that after the maneuvers in Belarus are complete, the Russian troops should leave the country again, will actually be followed by facts.”

SOT, Christofer Burger, Foreign ministry press spokesperson (German): “Of course, we expect from all sides that the promises and steps made in the Minsk agreements will be kept and implemented.”

SOT, Steffen Hebestreit, German government spokesperson (German): “But if you look at the overall situation and keep an eye on the last few weeks, this is a development that is good for now.”

SOT, Steffen Hebestreit, German government spokesperson (German): “What is important is that Ukraine can decide for itself whether it wants to join an alliance and whether it can then meet the necessary requirements. This is not the case at the moment, that it is seen this way, but a formalization or a renunciation or a statement by NATO is absolutely not correct.”

SOT, Steffen Hebestreit, German government spokesperson (German): “It is clear that Nord Stream 2 is intended to cover part of the energy supply of Germany and also of Western Europe and at the same time a process was running parallel to this, in which the then Federal Minister of Finance Olaf Scholz, among others, helped to initiate the extension of the transit contracts for the transmission of Russian gas through Ukraine.”

SOT, Steffen Hebestreit, German government spokesperson (German): “The cautious signals from the Kremlin yesterday also pointed in the direction that the Kremlin is still elected to route gas through Ukraine.”

Federal German press secretary Steffen Hebestreit commented on Russian troop deployments near the border with Ukraine, at a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

“There are now the first cautious announcements that the concentration of troops there would be reduced, that would be a good signal, but we still lack clear evidence that would also confirm this announcement, so we encourage the Russian side to follow words with deeds,” he said.

Also addressed at the press briefing were the topics of Nord Stream 2 and possible future accession of Ukraine to NATO.

A day earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz travelled to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
