Social Democratic Party candidate for chancellor Olaf Scholz discussed the COVID-19 pandemic and called on climate activists to end their hunger strike during a campaign rally outside the Bundestag in Nuremberg on Sunday.
“Just as after the last crisis we came out of it through growth, we will come out of it. It took 10 years last time, it might take 10 years again this time,” he said.
Scholz, who has served as the Federal Minister of Finance in the Federal Republic of Germany since March 2018, said the government would have €400 billion ($470 billion) in additional debt by the end of next year due to spending programs to recover from the pandemic.
The candidate also discussed the case of several young climate activists on hunger strike, demanding to meet with the candidates for chancellor.
“We are ready to talk to these young people after the election, but we ask them to stop the hunger strike immediately. It is dangerous to their lives and this should end immediately,” he said.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD top candidate (German): “What we still have to do now are small measures if you compare them with the lockdown and the restrictions of last year. That we wear masks in the train station and on the bus, okay, that there are restrictions if we want to go to a restaurant - we can do that. But we can do it all, that is the difference. And that is why my wish is that you get vaccinated, that is what is in demand now.”
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD top candidate (German): “The fact that we have come this far, that we have come this far, what does that have to do with? For example, with science and research in Germany, which has spent twenty years researching how to administer vaccines in a new way.”
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD top candidate (German): “In order to spend 40 billion euros on promoting short-time work, in order to make it possible for hundreds of billions of euros to flow, including in business aid and loans that have been granted, so that we can get this far, so that we can now grow into a new upswing, we have in any case taken on quite a lot of debt. At the end of next year, the federal budget will be €400 billion - €400 billion in additional debt, that is really a lot of money.
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD top candidate (German): “There is no need to be afraid of it, because just as we came out of the last crisis through growth, we will come out of it. It took 10 years last time, it may take 10 years again this time, maybe a little less.”
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD top candidate (German): “From my point of view it is good that so many are vaccinated, but there are still not enough and I want to say explicitly that it will be very bad, because we will actually experience something that will be difficult for all of us to endure and bear, namely that among the adults who are not vaccinated, there will be many who get an infection”
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD top candidate (German): “I want to mention, in case not everyone has noticed, that someone referred to a hunger strike that a few young people are doing because they want to talk to the candidate for chancellor. All of us have agreed, as we must in a political and democratic competition, that we are ready to talk to these young people after the election, but we ask them to stop the hunger strike immediately. It is dangerous to their lives and this should end immediately.”
