SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz confirmed the possibility of a coalition with the Green party during his meeting with voters in Leipzig on Sunday.
“One thing is clear, we won’t rule alone, and we look around and choose whose we would like to have near us, then it would be the Greens,” said Scholz.
“If the government will still be led by CDU/CSU, it will cost Germany its welfare and jobs, and that’s why we need a new start for Germany,” he added.
Scholz’s speech was shortly interrupted by Health for Future climate activists who walked in the audience with banners demanding more action for saving the climate.
The 2021 Bundestag elections are taking place on 26 September, with the latest Insa poll for Bild am Sonntag putting Scholz’ SPD at 25 percent in the lead.

SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD Chancellor Candidate (German): “It would have been appropriate of some of those who ask me question every day would be as brave as to talk to voters. That’s not up to them to decide what will happen at the elections. But what’s clear is that if SPD has as strong mandate is possible, then it would be easier to form a good government. And I think people shouldn’t speculate. One thing is clear, we won’t rule alone, and we look around and choose whose we would like to have near us, then it would be the Greens. I can already imagine that. And then we’ll see.”
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD Chancellor Candidate (German): “Voters are confused by these important tasks, but one thing can be said with certainty, if the government will still be led by CDU/CSU, it will cost Germany its welfare and jobs, and that’s why we need a new start for Germany, so that these goals can be reached, and so that we stay a strong industrial country with enough jobs in 10, 20, 30 years.”
SOT, Olaf Scholz, SPD Chancellor Candidate (German): “And it’s pretty obvious, that in the world of future we can get everything that’s important for us only if we have a strong and sovereign Europe, if we stay together. And that was good that during this economic and financial crisis that followed corona we acted differently, not as during previous years, and that we formulated an answer from united Europe. I strongly stood up for the idea that this would be possible. And we will have to use this way more often. It also concerns questions, and they are always political, where citizens wish that Europe acted more decisively, made more decisions, was able to make more things possible than it is today. In foreign politics, for example, or in finance policy. It works, as we have seen, but it should work better. And that’s why the progress in this question of strong sovereign Europe is urgent and not only in the future, but already now. And we want to reach that.”
