SPD chancellor candidate and Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said, who is currently leading the polls four weeks before the federal election, described the current developments in Afghanistan as “bitter”, during a speech in Berlin on Friday as part of his election campaign.

“And I expressively say that it is a great sadness overcoming us all, that those people have to live in an Islamic dictatorship again, that is terrible,” Scholz said. “Many of whom have hoped for a better life, for a little bit more state of law, a little bit more democracy, education for the children, for a better situation for girls and women, all those are seeing their hopes now scatter in Afghanistan.”

Scholz added it was the right decision, 20 years ago, to stand with the United States, and thanked German soldiers for bringing back thousands of people from Kabul airport in such a dangerous operation.
