Storm Ylenia disrupted operations at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on Thursday, leading to flight cancellations and delays in luggage delivery.
Airline Lufthansa cancelled 20 flights and warned about more delays due to the adverse weather conditions.
The airport’s spokesperson, Jan-Peter Haack, said the air traffic at Berlin Brandenburg remained unaffected until 9 AM local time, when winds became stronger.
“When the wind is too strong, there are some machines we are not allowed to operate on the field anymore and people are not allowed to go there, so we had to decrease the airport operations during the afternoon,” said Haack.
The German Weather Service (DWD) issued a nationwide warning due to the storm, with northern regions being the most affected, as winds reach speeds of up to 140 kilometres per hour and rain.

SOT, Jan-Peter Haack, Spokesperson for Berlin Brandenburg Airport: “In the morning, 6 AM, the operation started as planned, everything was fine, everything was on time. Until roundly about nine o’clock all of the airplanes could take off as planned airport operations were pretty smooth. Then, unfortunately, the wind started to become stronger and during the morning we had very much…a decrease in airport handling here. The airport handling could not be as we would like to because of the wind. When the wind is too strong, there are some machines we are not allowed to operate on the field anymore and people are not allowed to go there, so we had to decrease the airport operations during the afternoon. Now we are starting to take off again. Most of the airplanes can take off or can land, they can come, they can leave.”

SOT, Jan-Peter Haack, Spokesperson for Berlin Brandenburg Airport: “The problem is, there is still too much wind to open the baggage departure of the airplanes, so most of the airplanes cannot load or unload the baggage so they still have to keep the baggage they get loaded and we need to send the baggage to the passengers just later on today or tomorrow, so we would like to ask the passengers to communicate very closely with the airlines, with the provider to make sure that they will receive their luggage but the airlines will definitely take care of it. Every luggage will come to its destination.”

I cannot grant you any information about how many because we are still in this situation and we will see at the end of the day how many flights it actually is. This is the decision taken only by the airlines. The airlines decide, is it still senseful for me to let this airport that the airplane departs, or to let it fly or rebook my passengers so we cannot tell you how much this decision has been taken by the airlines but yes there were flights that have been cancelled.”
