Turkey: Passengers stranded at Istanbul airport due to heavy snowfall

Hundreds of passengers were still stranded at Istanbul Airport on Wednesday after days of bad weather and cancelled or delayed flights continued to take it’s toll on air traffic.

Riot police had to be deployed as a group of stranded tourists protested the cancellation of flights due to heavy snowfall on Tuesday.

All flights were cancelled after blizzards and Istanbul Airport, Europe’s busiest in 2021, was forced to shut down on Monday for the first time since it took over from the Ataturk Airport as Turkish Airlines’ new hub in 2019.

Some passengers who had been waiting all day for their flights had to stay at the airport overnight and some were even seen sleeping on flattened-out cardboard boxes.

Some of the heaviest snowfall in recent years paralysed life in the city over the course of the week. Measures have been taken throughout Istanbul and the surrounding areas due to the adverse weather conditions.
