Supporters of Berlin’s FC Union shared expectations of the new parliament, ahead of the club’s game on Saturday, and on the evening of Bundestag elections.

One of the fans, Ulf von Mach, expressed scepticism about SPD’s candidate Olaf Scholz “I don’t trust Scholz since Hamburg times, because of the bank and because of G7 council and his role in it.”

Another supporter, Stefan commented on the Merkel-era, saying that “she was popular in Europe and in the whole world actually, because she ruled in a healthy way, not like some men in politics.”

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Frank, Union supporter (German): “I’m very excited. Something should change, but it shouldn’t change radically, as here in Germany we need the basis. We need trust, and I would say that what CDU and SPD did last years was not amazing, but turning it all over, I’m not up for that.”

SOT, Ulf von Mach, Union supporter (German): “Stability, stability in the way it goes further. But maybe a bit faster changes in for example in traffic reform and social sphere, which had already started. For example what Die Linke are doing, how they care about homeless, and help during cold times, and support them, I find it good and it should continue. It’s an important issue for me.”

SOT, Ulf von Mach, Union supporter (German): “It’s really hard, because I don’t trust Scholz since Hamburg times, because of the bank and because of G7 council and his role in it, so I personally don’t trust him. And also not the CDU candidate, it’s quite difficult, so maybe better Ms Baerbock.”

SOT, Stefan, Union supporter, (German): “I already know for whom I’m voting, thinking security-wise. Let’s say so, it would be good if we have two ruling parties, but not two similar, but two that have some rough edges, that can have to come to terms, that would be the best for me. I don’t want to name the parties, but they should not really fit together, actually.”

SOT, Stefan, Union supporter, (German): “I found it in order, it was absolutely alright, during the time she was in power it was alright, what would others do differently? So, she (Merkel) was popular in Europe and in the whole world actually, because she ruled in a special way, not like some men in politics who are so quick-tempered and then taking everything back. So yes, Angela Merkel has also done a few things wrong, but also some things right, so she has ensured the cohesion.”

SOT, Julius, Union supporter (German): “I think many people like Merkel, otherwise she wouldn’t be a chancellor for 16 years, but it think also stood for standstill and little change.”
