German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opened the first ordinary session of the Bundesrat on Friday in Berlin, where he appealed to federalism, calling for state and federal governments to cooperate in the country’s best interest.

“Coordination among the states, balancing the interests of the Federal government and the states; that is what federalism is all about, and the Bundesrat is the heart of federalism in Germany,” said the Chancellor.

Topics on the agenda included the fight against the pandemic and climate change, reconstruction after last year’s catastrophic flood, social and economic policy.
