Thermometers in Athens showed temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) in Athens on Tuesday as a new heatwave hit the Greek capital.

Authorities have kept archaeological sites, including the Acropolis, closed during afternoon hours.

“It’s truly too hot. We are melting. We are waiting for the Acropolis to open, but I think that today is truly too hot to live,” said Maria, a tourist from Italy.

Presidential guards were seen taking a few moments to cool off in the shade after standing in the sun.

Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis announced on Monday that the country is experiencing its worst heatwave in 30 years.

On Monday, the National Observatory of Athens officially recorded the highest temperature officially recorded in Greece after the mercury hit 46.3 degrees Celsius (115.3 degrees Fahrenheit) in Phthiotis.

SOT, Maria, Tourist from Italy (Italian): “It’s truly too hot. We are melting. We are waiting for the Acropolis to open, but I think that today is truly too hot to live.”

SOT, Chris, Tourist from Austria: “So first of all, I’m feeling kind of salty because of all the sweat, and actually the heat is breathtaking. So it’s really hard to breathe from it, too. It’s like, you put a hammer on your head, it’s really pushing you down. It’s really hard to walk around in the sun. So what we did is we just found some places where we could hide in the shadow, or somewhere we can go inside, and that’s what we are doing actually because it’s far too hot to walk outside.”

SOT, Lace Matarlo, Tourist from Sweden: “Yeah it feels like, it’s so extreme, it’s like you are almost dying. You can’t breathe or anything because of the warmth. And the breeze is not doing anything.”

SOT, Martin, Tourist from Austria: “I feel really dizzy, sweating a lot so I need a lots of water, rest, make sure that we are not in the middle of the day in the sun, although we are right now. But getting in the shade is very important, and keeping your head cool.”
