Greek Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis and Defence Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos visited a recently finished 40 km (25 mi) wall and surveillance system in the Evros region, on the country’s border with Turkey, on Friday.
“We support people’s democratic rights and freedoms, but at the same time cannot allow the exploitation of migratory flows that may appear,” said Chrisochoidisin in a statement following the visit.
He went on to relay a message on behalf of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the country’s armed forces, police and local authorities to defend and secure the borders.
“Our borders will remain secure and inviolable. We will not allow irregular movements or attempts to violate them,” he concluded.
The completion of the wall comes amid the Taliban’s swift takeover of Afghanistan last week to stop Afghans from trying to reach Europe.
SOT, Michalis Chrisochoidis, Greece’s citizens’ protections minister (Greek): “We support people’s democratic rights and freedoms, but at the same time cannot allow the exploitation of migratory flows that may appear. It is our decision under the orders of the prime minister’s, which we are here today to relay to the officers of the Armed Forces, the police and local authorities, to defend and secure our borders. Our borders will remain secure and inviolable. We will not allow irregular movements or attempts to violate them.”
