As the raging wildfires razed down forests and homes on the Evia island, locals found shelter in a ferry moored by Pefki, on Sunday.

Residents on the Greek island were evacuated to the ferry amid the fires and the harmful air.

An elderly bedridden couple were seen being assisted by medics on the ferry.

The fires come amid the worst heatwave to strike the country in the last three decades.

Hundreds of residents of the island of Evia, which is located to the east of Athens, were evacuated by ferry on Friday while thousands of others fled the island. The fires on the island have been ongoing for the sixth day in a row, with more ferries reportedly on standby near the island.

TRANSLATIONS:

SOT, Evia resident (Greek): “I see my village burning and the air support is absent. Where are they? Firefighters. Where are they? What are they doing? We are being burned. We watch our live being destroyed. Where are they? The air support that was supposed to be sent. We are destroyed and nobody is here.”
