Locals and firefighters were seen continuing their efforts to battle multiple wildfires raging in Asmini, on the island of Evia, on Sunday.

Flames and smoke engulfed the island as fires burned in multiple locations. Residents of the Greek island helped firefighters to contain the blaze.

The fires come amid the worst heatwave to strike the country in the last three decades.

Hundreds of residents of the island of Evia, which is located to the east of Athens, were evacuated by ferry on Friday while thousands of others fled the island. The fires on the island have been ongoing for the sixth day in a row, with more ferries reportedly on standby near the island.

SOT, Local (Greek): “We’re in Asmini. Only the locals (helped) and now the guys, when the firefighters arrived and we achieved something. There is nothing, whatever you see, we see.”
