Greece: Thessaloniki police clash with protesters on anniversary of Polytechnic Uprising

Police were seen scuffling with protesters in Thessaloniki on Wednesaday, as the country marked the 48th anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising.
Demonstrators could be seen throwing molotov cocktails at riot police, with water cannons later being deployed.
Several cities across the country commemorated the anniversary of the uprising, with the US embassy advising its government personnel to avoid downtown Athens and Thessaloniki on Wednesday afternoon due to the riots.
The 1973 Athens Polytechnic uprising occurred during the so-called Regime of the Colonels from 1967 to 1974, where at least twenty-four civilians were killed in clashes while hundreds were injured.
The uprising began on November 14, escalating into an open revolt that finished in bloodshed in the early morning of November 17.
While the revolt was suppressed it is credited with leading to the eventual collapse of the military government the following year, with the date being marked by demonstrations during the day, with clashes often breaking out between police and protesters later in the night.
