The ancient birthplace of the Olympics is under threat as wildfires ravage swathes of Greece during southern Europe’s worst heatwave in decades.

Villages and towns north of Athens were being evacuated as residents fled the path of the blaze, caused by the heat dome effect - a large area of high pressure over the continent.
