Wildfires fuelled by the extreme temperatures reached residential areas in the suburbs of Athens, prompting evacuations. Greece is grappling with what Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has described as the ‘worst heatwave’ in over 30 years.

In the suburb of Varympompi, north of Athens, helicopters were deployed to battle wildfires. Firefighting efforts were underway near Mount Parnitha after a wildfire hit the area, cutting the motorway that connects Athens with northern and southern Greece.

Thermometers in Athens showed temperatures up to 50 °C (122 °F). Presidential guards were seen taking a few moments to cool off in the shade. Amid sweltering heat, some sites, including the Acropolis, were closed during afternoon hours.
