Head of pipeline consortium comments on cleanup efforts and consequences of oil spill in Black Sea

All consequences of the oil spill in the Black Sea have been eliminated, stated Director-General of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) Nikolay Gorban, speaking in Novorossiysk on Friday.

“For today the water area and the coastline are clean. This has already been documented many times, by Rosprirodnadzor and Rospotrebnadzor (Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-being). All the last samples demonstrate not exceeded threshold limit value indicators. We are constantly monitoring the coastline, and today the helicopter flew up to Anapa. Nothing was found,” Gorban noted.

According to the head of CPC, specialists continue to observe the situation both marine and terrestrial. After the incident, all equipment was checked. Moreover, the company has started negotiations with suppliers to purchase new hydraulic compensators.

“All hydraulic tappets are checked visually, as their documents dictate. No defects have been identified. We are negotiating with a supplier to purchase a new batch of hydraulic tappets for the first and second water treatment systems, and for the third one too. Because tappets for the third WTS have different designs and different sizes. Therefore, after receiving a new batch, we will make a decision on the complete or partial replacement of hydraulic tappets,” added Gorban.

During the press conference, the CPC head shared his version of the cause of the incident.

“The main version we have is, of course, a hidden factory defect. We are preparing a claim and have already called an expert from the manufacture. Because the destruction, in our opinion, had occurred inside,” Gorban said.

Further monitoring is going on all these days and until today, if anything appears, of course, we will respond. What about costs, the first costs are for the deployment of the emergency force and the fleet, and so on but this is part of the contract and will be counted. Further costs depend on the time when we can get the products from the supplier and, of course, we will incur installation costs.”
