The Honduran Congress began the new legislature with two parallel sessions, sharpening the political conflict, on Tuesday, two days before the inauguration of President-elect Xiomara Castro.
The session was held in the parliamentary precinct and headed by Luis Redondo, deputy of the Salvador Party of Honduras
In parallel and by videoconference, Jorge Calix, dissident deputy of the ruling party, installed his legislature as head of Congress, with the support of a dissident fraction of the Libre party and deputies of the opposition.
The unusual day is the continuation of the political crisis that broke out the week prior, when a group of deputies of the ruling Libre party turned their backs on the nomination of Redondo - agreed by Castro to seal the alliance with the Salvador Party of Honduras, before the elections - and decided to nominate Calix.
SOT, Luis Redondo, Deputy sworn-in as president of Congress in the Legislative Branch building (in Spanish): “I want to thank the deputies of the Libre party, who evidently number many more than the deputies of the Salvador party of Honduras, for honouring and being loyal to the commitment of their party, to the commitment of their president. I ask for a round of applause for them.”
SOT, Luis Redondo, Deputy sworn-in as president of Congress in the Legislative Branch building (in Spanish): “Making alliances and consensus is going to allow us into this National Congress, to build unity in the projects that are of benefit to the country.”
