Honduras: Hundreds of migrants join US-bound caravan

A migrant caravan was seen preparing with hundreds of people gathering in the town of San Pedros Sula on Saturday. The caravan is made up mostly of Honduran and Nicaraguan migrants.

The migrants congregated at the Metropolitan Transportation Centre on Friday and left between 03:00 and 04:00 local time (09:00 and 10:00 GMT) early on Saturday morning.

Migrants cited unemployment and government inaction for the move. “I do it because there is no work here, the poverty exceeds what we can eat and what we can do here in this country. Because one government comes in and another one goes out and it will continue to be the same,” said Josiel Antonio Munguia before he set off on the journey.

This is the first known large caravan of migrants setting off for the US in 2022.

Because one government comes in and another one goes out and it will continue to be the same. I’m 36 years old and for as long as I am aware, it has been always like this. There is no employment, anywhere. It’s been seven months since I’ve become unemployed. I have handed my CV everywhere and couldn’t find a job, I actively searched for work and couldn’t find any.”

SOT, Cesar Ramos, Local (Spanish): “Please don’t risk yourselves. We are in historic moment in Honduras, in which the people played an important role last November 28th, voting for new authorities. We are in a moment that we have to wait and see if the new government will really respond to the needs of the people, or the reasons that our population is leaving, and in that sense we do this call. Let’s wait a bit, probably conditions could change, everything won’t be resolved 100 percent as we wanted but let’s give them a vote of confidence, more than 1 million 700 thousand voted for the current president Xiomara Castro. Let’s give her a bit of time a vote of confidence to see what solutions will be given to the reasons why our compatriots migrate.”
