Around 4,800 voters from Hong Kong’s political elite cast their ballots on Sunday. People came to elect a new committee that will later choose half of the legislators and also Hong Kong’s new leader, at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai district.
As voters queued up early in the morning, polling station staff prepared to hand out ballot papers to the first group of them.
As the election changes were imposed by Beijing to ensure that only ‘patriots’ hold political office, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau Mr. Erick Tsang Kwok Wai said the new voting system proves to be efficient and aligns with the ‘one country, two systems’ principle.

SOT, Mr. Erick Tsang Kwok Wai, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau: ” I’ was saying that this improvement of our electoral systems is to every Hong Kong people is a very good thing , and it is good for our one country - two systems to fully implement, so I hope that in our future every voter to come out to cast their vote and exercise their responsibility, thank you.”
