A public memorial service was held at the Carre Theatre in Amsterdam on Wednesday for all those who wanted to say a final farewell to Peter de Vries, the well-known crime reporter who died on July 15.

Hundreds had formed lines in front of Carre even before its opening to bid farewell to de Vries.

The actual funeral of the journalist will take place on Thursday in complete privacy as only family and guests will be allowed to attend.

Peter R de Vries was shot in the head at close range on the evening of July 6 after taking part in a live TV talk show.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

De Vries was well known for his reporting on organised crime.

SOT, One of the attendees at the public funeral: “Well, Peter for me was like a hero. He was for me the best journalist of the Netherlands. He was such ... he was so unique in the way he investigated things the way he did his work. So, it’s such a shame that he’s not here anymore, because he’s so important for the Netherlands, and that’s why I’m here today, to say goodbye to him because he’s such an important person not only for us but also for the whole country.”

SOT, One of the attendees at the public funeral: “Why I’m here? Because of what Peter did, how he did it, and I’m afraid the people don’t dare to speak out anymore of these things. We had more murders like this, Theo van Gogh and Pim Fortuyn, and it has to stop. We need people to speak out. Our government isn’t, isn’t such a good fighter. He was a good fighter, and we need good fighters.”

SOT, One of the attendees at the public funeral: “An attack on the rule of law in this place, it’s more than this, it’s an attack on the rule of law here in Holland and in Europe and in the world.”
