India: At least 112 dead as monsoon rain brings chaos to Maharashtra

At least 112 people died after heavy rainfall triggered landslides and floods and caused destruction in the western state of Maharashtra, as seen in Mahad on Saturday.

Several districts in the state - primarily the Konkan region - have been pound by incessant rain over the past few days, which cut off hundreds of villages and left thousands stranded.

“Many houses are completely destroyed and they are homeless now. Animals have also died, the damages are so much that even staying here will be very difficult,” a local said.

This is reportedly the heaviest rain spell in the state in July in 40 years.

The Indian military has been roped in to help with rescue efforts as at least 84,452 people were evacuated, officials said.

SOT, Santosh Inamdar, Mahad Resident (Hindi): “There was a lot of water this time, the last time that the water came in 2005, the level was very low, this is the highest part of Mahad and there is never much water here, but so much water came this time the whole town went underwater. The water level was 15 to 20 feet (4.5 to 6 m) high. Because of these floods, we lost everything and nothing left for us. All the people who are living here have now become homeless. Many houses are completely destroyed and they are homeless now. Animals have also died, the damages are so much that even staying here will be very difficult.”

SOT, H.N. Bhavaskar, Mahad physician: “Now this is the third time we are facing this flood at Mahad, because this time the flood level was very high, More than 20 feet (6m). And the public was not prepared because it was a sudden announcement about the tide of the ocean. It’s important now that Mahad should be well protected because the maximum properties of the people have been lost. There is no food, no water, no electricity, and no proper roads today.”

SOT, H.N. Bhavaskar, Mahad physician: “We appeal to the government to give the best health facilities, that is the first thing. Give them food, give them water, arrange electricity earlier, we are not able to follow the news on what is happening in Mahad. All should be vaccinated now, this is important because we are facing Corona, now again the Corona case will increase because of this environment. so we should vaccinate all the people.”
