India: Lavrov, Shoigu hold 2+2 format talks in New Delhi

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived in New Delhi on Monday to take part in negotiations with their Indian counterparts in 2+2 format.

“I am really pleased to take part in the first-ever meeting of the heads of Defence and Foreign Affairs Ministries in ‘2+2’ format. This initiative has been endorsed by [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and [Indian Prime Minister Narendra] Modi,” Lavrov said.

He also stressed that Russia and India share a common view of a more fair, more democratic, polycentric world order and promote a similar vision regarding the problems of peace and security.

“I am sure that the new mechanism will become an efficient dialogue platform to discuss a wide range of regional and international topics, will contribute to deepening traditional mutual understanding, strengthening the specially privileged strategic partnership between our countries,” said the diplomat.

In his turn, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that Moscow and New Delhi are long-standing strategic partners that work jointly to “safeguard our common interests and to ensure peace, progress, and prosperity for our peoples.”

Later on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the 21st annual India-Russia summit.
