India: Washington trying to undermine S-400 deal - Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the deal on the delivery of Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile systems to India is proceeding as planned despite the US attempts to undermine it, speaking in New Delhi on Monday.

“We witness attempts on the part of the US to undermine such cooperation to make India obey the Americans, to purchase their armaments, and to follow the American vision of how this region should be developed,” he said, following negotiations with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

“Our Indian friends have firmly and clearly explained that India is a sovereign country, and they will decide whose weapons to buy and who will be its partner in this and other areas,” the Russian diplomat added.

Lavrov is in New Delhi to take part in the 2+2 format talks between the defence and foreign ministers of the two countries.
