India: Opposition holds rally to demand probe into Pegasus spyware scandal

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee staged a massive protest in Chennai on Thursday, in the wake of the Pegasus spyware scandal involving the spying of activists, journalists and opponents around the world by an Israeli company.

Party leaders and lawmakers demanded a judicial probe and condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi for undermining the security of the nation, following revelations that dozens of Indians were potential targets of the spyware.

“Modi’s BJP government snooping into our leader Rahul Gandhi’s telephone and social media accounts, not just from our party, they have also snooped Indian business tycoons, leaders from other parties, and around 300 contacts were there in that spyware list. To condemn this incident and to give the petition to the governor of Tamilnadu, we have gathered here in larger numbers,” said party leader R. Sundaramoorthy.

Demonstrators attempted to march towards the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor of Tamil Nadu, but were contained by hundreds of police officers blocking the road with metal fences.

According to an investigation published Sunday by 17 media sources worldwide including Le Monde and The Guardian, the Pegasus software, developed by the Israeli company NSO Group, made it possible to spy on at least 180 journalists, 600 politicians as well as 85 rights activists and 65 business leaders since 2016.

The Israeli tech firm NSO Group, which created Pegasus, said it provided “authorised governments with technology that helps them combat terror and crime.”

SOT, R. Sundaramoorthy, Leader Congress Party (Tamil): “Modi is a liar, whatever he says is a lie, from the year 2014 he is running the government by giving false promises. All parties should join hands with the Congress party and remove this BJP government from power. Only then we can save Indian democracy.”
