Iran: Alarming air pollution level in Tehran prompts closures of school

Iran’s capital Tehran registered a red air quality alert and ranked as the world’s sixth most polluted city where all population groups are at risk, on Thursday. The air quality index stood at 210, considered to be “very unhealthy” by world standards.

This means the degree of pollution hanging over the city is so high that it is dangerous for all groups, including healthy people. Schools are to remain closed to in-person classes for three days, until Thursday.

This is while prolonged exposure to PM2.5 particles in the country annually causes 41,700 premature deaths. Moreover, air pollution has exacerbated severe COVID-19 conditions and possibly increased mortality.

Iran’s capital grapples with pollution and even occasional rains have a short impact on improving air quality. Most private and public vehicles are old, with three-decade-old technology because of long-running economic problems and government controls.

SOT, Tehran resident (Farsi): “In our society, if people use public transportation more, and the government and officials help make public transportation more accessible to everyone, I think this will be one of the most fundamental solutions. When one looks at cars, one sees that most cars are commuting with one passenger, and this in itself will cause more air pollution. God willing, by improving the culture of using public transportation, we can reduce air pollution in our country.”
