Iran has agreed to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to hold maintenance of the surveillance cameras on its nuclear facilities, in the first meeting of IAEA chief Rafael Grossi with the new government in Tehran, Sunday.

Rossi called the agreement a “very concrete result.”

In a press conference following the meeting, the head of the Irani Atomic Energy Organization Mohammad Eslami announced that ‘the relevant technical team’ of the UN nuclear watchdog would “replace the memory cards of the surveillance cameras” and “perform technical measures for the cameras.”

He stressed that the meeting with Grossi and the consequent agreement was exclusively technical, with ‘no place’ for political negotiations, but with further talks planned in Tehran and Europe.

Grossi said the general conference of the IAEA, set to take place on September 16 to 20 in Vienna, “is the most important international event in the nuclear sphere.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the UN agency stated that “verification and monitoring activities have been seriously undermined” by Irani authorities, with Grossi visiting Tehran to find a temporary agreement.

SOT, Rafael Mariano Grossi, International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General: “I am glad to say that today we were able to have a very concrete, a very concrete result which has to do with the continuity of the operation of the Agency’s [IAEA’s] equipment here which is indispensable for us to provide the necessary guarantees and the information to the IAEA and to the world that everything is in order and that we are going to be able to assist, also to assist, Iran in its future negotiations in the context of the JCPOA.”

SOT, Rafael Mariano Grossi, International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General: “For me, this visit has a very important meaning because it is my first visit after the elections and a new government has taken over in the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

SOT, Rafael Mariano Grossi, International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General: “But in less than two weeks in Vienna, the general conference of the IAEA will take place. And as you know, this is the most important international event in the nuclear sphere.”

SOT, Mohammad Eslami, Head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (Farsi): “We agreed that the relevant technical team would come to Iran after the agreement to replace the memory cards of the surveillance cameras and that they would be able to perform technical measures for the cameras and replace the old memory cards with the new cards according to the safeguard procedure. As they are kept and sealed in Iran, they will seal the old cards in the same place and will install new memory cards in the cameras. This is a normal routine in the Agency’s [IAEA] oversight system.”

SOT, Mohammad Eslami, Head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (Farsi) : “The whole issue between us is basically technical and political issues will have no place at all in the relationship between us.”

SOT, Mohammad Eslami, Head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (Farsi): “We agreed to attend the next meeting and to continue our talks on the sidelines of the meeting. We also agreed that in the near future, he will travel to Tehran again and hold talks at various levels.”
