The Head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami said it was no longer necessary to maintain surveillance cameras at Iran’s nuclear facilities during a Tehran press conference on Wednesday.
Eslami is disputing the need for the cameras installed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at Iranian nuclear facilities, in a dispute towards the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
“There should no longer be a need for cameras and surveillance when the other party has not fulfilled its obligations,” the AEOI leader stated.
However, Eslami ensured that “the IAEA cameras are still there” and at the moment Iran complies with regulations and safeguard established by the UN nuclear watchdog.
Following a meeting held earlier in the week between the leadership of the AEOI and IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, Iran gave the green-light for an international team of technicians to access its nuclear facilities for the purpose of servicing IAEA surveillance cameras and replacing their memory cards.

SOT, Mohammad Eslami, Head of Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI), (Farsi): “In addition to our obligations under [IAEA] safeguards, we are responsible to be transparent, according to the JCPOA agreement, a number of cameras were installed, which, given that the other parties did not fulfill their obligations, ie did not fulfill their commitments, there should no longer be a need for cameras and surveillance when the other party has not fulfilled its obligations. In recent terrorist operations that took place in some places, a combination of them was damaged, including [IAEA] safeguard cameras.”

SOT, Mohammad Eslami, Head of AEOI, (Farsi): “According to [IAEA] regulations and safeguard, and in accordance with many of the processes explicitly stated in the law regarding the International Atomic Energy Agency, the IAEA cameras are still there. And they work on the continuity of knowledge and awareness of the nuclear processes for the whole world, which includes us. It has been since day one, it still is.”

SOT, Mohammad Eslami, Head of AEOI, (Farsi): “Well, that led to two extremely harsh and somehow very destructive reports. And we arranged this meeting to clear up the ambiguity and make it clear. This meeting was the first step in preventing from creating ambiguity and disrupting the implementation of the country’s nuclear programs. And we are confident that with the achievement we have achieved at this stage, with god’s help, we will manage the situation in such a way that we will continue to ensure that, first, there is no ambiguity for the Agency [IAEA] regarding our nuclear program, which is completely peaceful and in accordance with the rules, and secondly, we do not continue the obligations of JCPOA that do not continue according to the law of the parliament, and we are bound by the law of Strategic Action [Plan to Lift Sanctions and Protect Iranian Nation’s Interests].”
