Iran: Raisi urges educational sector to continue research despite sanctions

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi encouraged the science sector to research despite imposed sanctions against the country in a speech at the academic year’s opening ceremony at the University of Tehran, on Monday.
“We have not reached an impasse in this country. Yes, the enemy has created sanctions and threats for us, but I will give you an example, dear professors,” he told educators in the audience. “We had more sanctions, threats, and restrictions in the nuclear industry than any other industry. But our progress in this industry has been more than in other industries. It turns out that it is possible to work.”
Raisi underlined the importance of science for the strength of the country and urged the institutions to further developments in areas other than the nuclear industry.
“The formation of a strong Iran requires the production of strong science. Strength is not only in building missiles, though building missiles is an honour for the country and an honour for us. But there is work to be done in many areas,” he said.
Health Minister Bahram Einollahi, Science Minister Mohammad-Ali Zolfigol, Alireza Zali, Research and Technology head of Task Force for Fighting Coronavirus, and other top governmental officials also attended the ceremony, abiding sanitary guidelines due to the coronavirus pandemic.
